Young Indians annihilate the US team! Day #8

With the 8th round of the 44th Chess Olympiad concluded, here is the recap of the eventful round.

India 2 dominates while India 1 fumbles, US in trouble

The young India 2 team defeated the mighty US team with a crushing margin of 3-1, winning two games and drawing the other two. GM Gukesh D. won his match against chess legend GM Fabiano Caruana. This is Gukesh’s 8th victory in the total 8 games he has played, thus continuing his brilliant unbeaten knock. GM Raunak Sadhwani defeated American GM Leinier Perez on board 4 to take his team total to 2 points. The victories were nicely complimented after GM Nihil Sarin and GM R. Praggnanandhaa drew their respective matches.

With this resounding match victory, India 2 is ranked 2nd on the points table. On the other hand, the top-seeded US team slipped to the 9th spot in the points table. India 1 played against the 1st ranked Armenian team, and lost 1.5-2.5. Armenia retained its 1st rank, while India 1 slipped to the 7th spot.

Brazil draws against 8th seeded Ukraine

Brazilian team under the guidance of Chess Gaja founder GrandMaster Priyadharshan drew their match against the 8th seeded Ukraine. This came after two draws and one victory on both sides. Playing against a team with higher rating and a much higher seed, the Brazilian team held their nerve to draw the difficult match.

India continues to impress in the Women’s category

India 1 drew their match against Ukraine in the Women’s category with four draws. This draw ended India’s winning streak, with 7 victories and 1 draw now. However, India continues to hold the top rank in the rankings of the women’s category. Georgia defeated Armenia to retain its 2nd rank. Ukraine remained the 3rd ranked team despite the draw against India 1.

The 8th round was marked by one of the most brilliant upsets of the tournament so far, India 2’s victory over the US. Gukesh D. continued his sensational performance. Interestingly, Gukesh had offered a draw by Threefold repetition to Caruana in the game, but Caruana had declined the draw offer, and went on to lose the game.
