Details of the 51st Annual World Open, Philadelphia

The 51st Annual World Open is a prestigious chess tournament held in July each year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tournament is open to players of all ages and skill levels, with various sections based on rating.

We highly encourage Chess Gaja students to take part in this major chess tournament in the US circuits this summer.

Event Date

The event is scheduled to occur on June 30th to July 4th, July 1st to 4th, or July 2nd to 4th, 2023.

Location

The event will be hosted at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown, 201 North 17th St, Philadelphia PA 19103.

Sections

  • Open Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30. FIDE rated, GM & IM norms possible. FIDE now requires at least one Swiss System (at least 40 players) norm to obtain a title.
  • Under 2200 Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30 (4-day option, rds. 1-2 G/60 d10; 3-day option. rds. 1-5 G/35 d10). U2200 and U2000 40/90 games are FIDE rated.
  • Under 2000 Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30 (4-day option, rds. 1-2 G/60 d10; 3-day option. rds. 1-5 G/35 d10). U2200 and U2000 40/90 games are FIDE rated.
  • Under 1800 Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30 (4-day option, rds. 1-2 G/60 d10; 3-day option. rds. 1-5 G/35 d10). U2200 and U2000 40/90 games are FIDE rated.
  • Under 1600 Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30 (4-day option, rds. 1-2 G/60 d10; 3-day option. rds. 1-5 G/35 d10). U2200 and U2000 40/90 games are FIDE rated.
  • Under 1400 Section – 40/90, SD/30, d30 (4-day option, rds. 1-2 G/60 d10; 3-day option. rds. 1-5 G/35 d10). U2200 and U2000 40/90 games are FIDE rated.

Fair play Measures

  • Open Section: June FIDE ratings are utilized.
  • Under 2200 through Under 1400: July official USCF ratings are used.
  • Unofficial or Regular Online uschess.org ratings may be used if a player is otherwise unrated.
  • Players are required to disclose foreign, FIDE, and other over-the-board ratings. These ratings, adjusted if necessary, may be used if higher than USCF ratings.
  • Over-the-board ratings such as club, league, scholastic, state or province, etc., adjusted if appropriate, may be considered at the organizers’ discretion if they are higher than USCF ratings.
  • Ratings below the latest official USCF rating, as listed corresponding to the ending date of the tournament, will not be used.

Prizes

A total of $208,000 in guaranteed prizes is offered across the top six sections of the tournament.
