The chess scene in Singapore once again comes alive with the 77th National Schools
Individual Chess Championships 2026, one of the most prestigious youth chess
tournaments in the country. Organized by the Singapore Chess Federation, this highly
anticipated event brings together hundreds of talented students from schools across
Singapore to compete, learn, and showcase their skills at the national level.
This year’s championship takes place on March 16–17, 2026, at the iconic OCBC Arena at
The Kallang in Singapore, where young chess enthusiasts will battle it out across multiple
age categories ranging from u-8 to u- 20 in both Open and Girls sections.
For many students, this tournament is not just a competition but a milestone in their chess
journey.
A Premier Event for School Chess in Singapore
The National Schools Individual Championships (NSI) has long been considered the
backbone of competitive scholastic chess in Singapore. Each year, students from
government schools, international schools, and private institutions gather to compete in a
9-round FIDE-rated Swiss tournament, played with a rapid time control of 15 minutes
plus a 10-second increment per move.
Beyond trophies and medals, the stakes are high. Top performers can earn recognition
within the national chess ecosystem, and certain winners receive invitations to participate in
other national-level events such as the National Rapid Chess Championships.
More importantly, the tournament provides young players with a unique opportunity to:
● Test their skills against strong opponents
● Gain valuable tournament experience
● Represent their schools with pride
● Become part of Singapore’s vibrant chess community
Chess Gaja’s Growing Presence in Singapore
At Chess Gaja, we are incredibly proud to be part of the thriving chess ecosystem in
Singapore. Over the past few years, our academy has steadily expanded its presence in the
region, mentoring young players, like Aurik Joshi and Kanav Raman who are eager to test their abilities in competitive environments like the NSI.
Last year, during the 76th National Schools Individual Chess Championships 2025,
more than 20 Chess Gaja students from Singapore participated, competing across
several age categories and gaining valuable tournament experience.
These events represent exactly what we believe in at Chess Gaja: learning through
competition, resilience through challenge, and growth through experience.
Our students do not just participate in tournaments; they prepare rigorously with structured
training programs that emphasize:
● Tactical sharpness
● Strategic understanding
● Practical tournament skills
● Psychological resilience
Through this approach, we aim to develop players who are not only strong competitors but
also thoughtful and disciplined thinkers.
Building on a Special Moment in Singapore
The NSI tournament also holds a special place in the Chess Gaja journey. In 2025, our
academy celebrated a memorable milestone at the Singapore Nationals, a moment that
highlighted the dedication of our students and coaches
That achievement reaffirmed something we have always believed: when young players are
given the right guidance, opportunities, and environment, they can achieve remarkable
things on the chessboard.
Events like the NSI serve as the perfect stage for these stories to unfold.
Why Tournaments Like NSI Matter
For young chess players, tournament play is one of the most powerful learning experiences.
While lessons and practice games build foundational skills, nothing compares to the
pressure and excitement of a real tournament game.
In a championship like the NSI, players must:
● Manage time under pressure
● Prepare for different styles of opponents
● Recover quickly from losses
● Maintain focus over multiple rounds
These experiences help transform beginners into serious competitors.
Looking Ahead
As the 77th National Schools Individual Chess Championships 2026 unfolds, we at
Chess Gaja are excited to see our students once again take their seats at the board,
representing both their schools and their passion for chess.
More than medals or rankings, these tournaments represent something greater: the next
generation of chess talent in Singapore.
And at Chess Gaja, we remain committed to supporting that journey every step of the way.
From training sessions to tournament halls, our mission remains the same: to nurture
young chess minds and help them reach their full potential.
