In a major step to support chess talent, Tamil Nadu will soon be home to an exclusive chess academy, the “Home of Chess” dedicated to training the next generation of chess players. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, will operate under the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and aims to cultivate future grandmasters and world champions from the state.
The announcement was made during a state event to honor D. Gukesh, the youngest grandmaster to win the World Chess Championship. Gukesh was presented with a cash prize of Rs 5 crore during the event.
The Vision Behind Home of Chess Academy
The Home of Chess academy will function under the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), with a clear vision of identifying and developing young chess talents from across the state. The academy aims to provide world-class training, mentorship, and resources to aspiring players, ensuring that Tamil Nadu continues to produce top-tier chess professionals.
Tamil Nadu has a rich chess heritage, boasting 31 of India’s 85 grandmasters. This academy will further solidify the state’s position as a chess powerhouse in India. Chief Minister Stalin emphasized that the event was not only to celebrate Gukesh’s victory but also to encourage young people to excel in sports.
At the event Gukesh expressed his gratitude to his parents, coaches, Viswanathan Anand, and the Tamil Nadu government for their support. He acknowledged that his victory wouldn’t have been possible without the Tamil Nadu government’s support and described Chennai as India’s chess capital, noting the vibrant chess community’s role in his journey. His success has left many wondering if a ‘Gukesh Chess Academy’ could be the next step in his journey
