Uzbekistan captured the 2026 Chess Olympiad Open title on home soil, securing their second Olympiad gold after their previous triumph in Chennai in 2022.
India finished with the silver medal after a 2–2 draw against Hungary in the final round. India and Germany ended level on 18 match points and 28.5 game points, with India taking silver through the applicable tiebreak criteria.

India entered the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad as the defending champion in both the Open and Women’s sections following its historic double-gold performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest.
Although India did not retain either team gold medal in Samarkand, the country finished on the podium in both sections:

India Retains the Gaprindashvili Cup
India’s combined performance also earned the country the Nona Gaprindashvili Cup, awarded to the federation with the best combined result across the Open and Women’s sections.
It marked India’s third consecutive Gaprindashvili Cup, following victories in Chennai 2022 and Budapest 2024.

How Uzbekistan Won the 2026 Chess Olympiad
Playing in front of their home crowd in Samarkand, Uzbekistan produced one of the strongest performances of the tournament.
A particularly important moment came in Round 6, when Uzbekistan defeated defending champion India 2½–1½.
Nodirbek Yakubboev’s victory over Nihal Sarin proved decisive, while the remaining three boards were drawn.
Uzbekistan later entered the final round ahead of its challengers and defeated Ukraine 2½–1½ to secure the Open title.
The victory gave Uzbekistan its second Chess Olympiad Open gold medal, four years after winning its first title in Chennai.
India’s Road to Silver
India remained among the leading Open teams throughout the tournament.
After suffering its first match defeat against Uzbekistan in Round 6, India remained in medal contention and entered the final stages fighting for the title.
In the final round against Hungary, India drew 2–2. Arjun Erigaisi defeated Peter Leko, while World Champion Gukesh D lost to Gleb Dudin. The result ultimately left India with the silver medal.
India Women Secure Bronze
India’s Women’s team entered Samarkand as defending champions after winning gold at Budapest 2024.
Their 2026 campaign included setbacks as well as important victories, but the team remained in medal contention heading into the final round.
A 2–2 draw against Georgia secured India a place on the podium, giving the defending champions the bronze medal.
Savitha Shri was one of India’s standout performers during the tournament and also earned an individual gold medal.
